An IT man from Bath has led his wacky racing team to victory in the ‘Bonkers to Budapest’ banger rally, raising a total of £1900 for the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity.

Team Disco, led by Harry Burton, 23, from Bath IT service provider Backup Direct, and Matt Michaluk, 24, took part in the four day trip across Europe in a converted Renault Espace, furnished with disco ball and dance floor. The pair was dressed in Elvis-style jumpsuits and wigs to complete the disco theme.

Starting in Lille, northern France, the rally traced a route through seven European countries before finishing in style with a 35 car convoy into the Hungarian capital, Budapest. Team Disco won the race by accumulating points over a series of challenges, including car decoration and fancy dress, as well as games such as ‘paparazzi bingo’, which involved the team taking pictures of themselves in specific, unusual situations.

Harry Burton of Backup Direct, reports: “The rally was a great experience - definitely one I’ll never forget - with some brilliant challenges thrown in for good measure. We certainly attracted plenty of attention on our trip round Europe, so it wasn’t too difficult to get people to be in our pictures, helping us to score a lot of points.

“At the end of the day, who doesn’t love disco? Especially when it’s for a good cause,” concludes Burton.

Team Disco donated its £1000 prize fund, along with the rest of the money raised, to the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, which provides practical and emotional support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.
