Lucky for some: Byte Night 13
The leaders of the IT-backed programme have responded to an unprecedented level of demand and interest, both from business leaders and even cities, all wanting to be part of this national event.
Lord Digby Jones, business guru and former director of the CBI, is the latest ambassador to pledge support for the cause while the Board has today announced plans to host a sleep out in Cambridge, following calls from local business people to expand into the region. Sleep-outs will be hosted again in locations including London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Thames Valley.
The launch of the campaign forms part of a programme to expand the commitment of Byte Night beyond one night and into a longer-term pledge, to fight youth homelessness and child neglect for as long as it takes.
To date, the campaign has raised over £2.5m for the charity, and organisers hope this year’s appeal will generate more than £600,000 alone, with 700 sleepers taking part.
Andrew Harris, director of fundraising and appeals at Action for Children, commended the impact the campaign has had: “Since its inception 13 years ago, Byte Night has gone from strength to strength. The event has allowed us to continue to provide safe and secure accommodation to vulnerable children and young people at risk of homelessness and consequently help break cycles of neglect and deprivation. The continued support from the technology industry is second to none.”
Harris concluded: “We’re proud of the link that’s been established with the technology and business community, and look forward to continuing to work closely together in the fight against youth homelessness.”
The 2010 event will take place on October 8, at five sites across the country: London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Thames Valley and Cambridge, a new addition to the roster. Sleepers can get involved either as an individual or as part of a team. And while they may be without a roof over their heads, they’ll feel right at home – participants range from junior staff to C-level executives across a range of industries, many of whom return year after year to show their support, meet industry colleagues and experience something out of the ordinary.
