Distributors and analysts highlight mobile PC sales growth while Desktops remain flat.

New data from analyst firm IDC and market research company Context have shown a rise in the sale of new PC’s although emerging markets account for the bulk of new business.

According to IDC, consumer portables remained the key driver, with shipments increasing 33.5 percent from a year ago, while consumer desktop demand remained weak as the market continued its transition to mobility. Desktop shipments will be roughly flat in 2010, while portable PC growth of 18.1 percent will continue to drive overall volume gains.

“Once again, the PC market shows its resiliency,” said Loren Loverde, program director IDC Worldwide Trackers. “The speed of market stabilisation and growth in key segments reflect the essential role of personal computing today. Technology evolution and falling prices remain a compelling combination. As commercial spending recovers in 2010, we expect to see robust growth over the next several years.”

However IDC believes that emerging regions, which now account for half of the total market, will lead the way with double-digit growth for 2010.

Supporting Data from Context Distributor Panel, an analysis of PC sales revenue from fifty-eight major IT distributors across Europe, still shows a drop of 1.6 percent compared to the same period last year. However Context shows an increase of just over 10 percent compared to the previous month. However the fourth quarter is traditionally stronger due to back to school and Christmas purchases.

“Our panel of distributors reported a slow-down in the rate of unit sales decline on desktops, servers and workstations during November,” explains Context co-founder Jeremy Davies, “This was particularly the case for desktop PCs where the decline virtually stopped with sales down 0.4 percent compared to the previous month.”
