Google has confirmed that more details are incoming about its upcoming Chrome OS operating system later on today.

It had previously been speculated that the very first Alpha version of Chrome OS would be released to coincide with Microsoft’s release of Windows 7 last month. Instead, Google is set to release fresh information about Chrome OS, which was announced earlier this year, later on today (which Microsoft’s annual developer gathering is taking place). There’s been no confirmation that early code will be available for hardware partners who have already expressed their interest in including Chrome OS on their netbooks.
Google’s Chrome OS is set to be a lightweight operating system with the emphasis on getting to a workable desktop screen very quickly indeed. From there, it’ll rely heavily on cloud computing for its applications, with the idea being that bloat on the host computer is kept to a minimum (with the knock-on being that the operating system will continue to run at a fair speed even after it’s been installed on a users’ machine for months).
Since it originally announced the project, Google has remained quiet as it busied itself putting it together. However, as our sister site IT PRO reports, Google will be webcasting a presentation it’s making at its headquarters about it later today. The webcast begins at 6pm UK time, and you can find more information here.
