Today the newest version of Microsoft’s information management system, SharePoint 2010, was officially launched. For many software resellers, this will be one of the major events of the year as thousands of businesses look to upgrade from the previous incarnation.

With the range of features that SharePoint brings to a business, from document management and full text search to the creation of a corporate intranet system, the popularity of this product is going to be high.

However, for resellers, SharePoint 2010 may present as many problems as the opportunities it creates. The sheer number of resellers offering the product means that margins are going to suffer as resellers will have no way to differentiate themselves other than on price. However, as every cloud has a silver lining, it is possible for resellers to use this to their advantage.

The first thing to understand is that although SharePoint is a powerful and versatile product, it is slightly limited by the way that it categorises, sorts and searches for information. As with the majority of other computer programmes and operating systems, SharePoint 2010 sorts data hierarchically, in a series of list.
Although anyone who has ever used a computer is familiar with this, it doesn’t offer an efficient way to search for data, especially on corporate intranet systems where large amounts of data is stored. For example, when data is sorted into directories, folders and sub folders, ultimately it is down to the individual as to where it is saved, meaning that it can be difficult for someone else to find this information if they thought it should have been stored somewhere else.  If you don’t know exactly where the file has been stored, you could be in trouble.
